Some Historical Notes About Denbigh Golf Club

Denbigh Golf Club was formed in September 1908 after a meeting was held at the Bull Hotel to consider the feasibility of forming a Golf Club. The driving force was a Mr Guy Francis a partner in Parry Jones and Francis, Solicitors, Hall Square, Denbigh. Now known as Swayne Johnson & Wight. The first course was at Ystrad and was described as Cae Tros Ffordd (the field over the road) on the Ystrad fields between Ystrad Road and the Railway Bridge. A nine hole course was constructed and the club continued there until 1918 when the tenancy of the links was terminated and the club wound up.
29. 4. 1922 A meeting presided over Guy Francis was held at the Council Chamber to consider the revival of the club Mr . Francis expressed his willingness to purchase land known as Llanberis and to lease it to Denbigh Golf Club at an annual charge of £35 plus 32.10s. tithes.
31. 8. 1922 A professional, John Stockton, was appointed at a wage of £3 per week, his immediate task being that of preparing a 9 hole course.
22. 1. 1923 At the A.G.M. Mr. G. B. Behrens was elected President, and Mr. Francis elected Captain.
18. 4. 1923 Caddy charges were agreed at 7d. for 9 holes and 10d. for 18, a penny to be deducted from the charge for club funds.
15. 5. 1923 On the proposition of General Clemson, a horse was hired for mowing, cost £1 per week.
22. 2. 1924 Mr. William Edwards, The Garage, was invited to run his bus on Thursdays and Saturdays leaving Denbigh at 2.p.m. and leaving the Golf Club at 6.30p.m.
5. 3. 1928 The Greens Committee reported , it would be cheaper to purchase a horse than hire one, even if it had to be sold at the end of the season.
26. 7. 1928 Brooke Bros., were asked to reduce the bus fare from Denbigh to the Golf Links to 2d.
27. 1. 1930 A letter was written to Rev. R.H.Davies, Swan lane Chapel, denying the accusation that Sunday drinking was permitted at the Golf Club.
17. 11. 1930 The land above Tyddyn Ucha was leased from Mr. Lloyd, Coppy Farm for 14 years.
2. 1. 1933 The Ladies' team was congratulated on winning the inaugural competition for the North Wales Handicap Shield.
6. 2. 1933 It was decided to dispose amongst the poor of the town, the old boots lying about the clubhouse.
27. 11. 1941 It was agreed that as a gesture by the Club Mr. Tudor, Coppy Farm be allowed to plough the 11 acre field above Tyddyn Ucha and the tenancy of this land be terminated.
12. 8. 1946 Subs. Reduced-Gents from 3 guineas to 2 guineas, Ladies from 2 guineas to 1 guinea.
15. 9. 1954 Mrs. Francis and her son offered to sell the course to the Club for £1000. The National Provincial Bank agreed to make a loan at 4 per cent.
2. 10. 1962 The County council were given permission to dump waste soil in the quarry behind the No.9 green. It was the club's intention to eventually construct a new green in this area.
28. 9. 1967 Tyddyn Ucha was purchased from Plas Heaton Estates at an agreed price of £1500.
12. 3. 1975 (Free Press) A dream of members of the Denbigh Golf Club became a reality last Thursday with the opening of the new £23,000 clubhouse. The new premises, built on the site of the old clubhouse, were officially opened by the club's first Patron, Mr. R.O.Jones.
10. 6. 1983 At a Special General Meeting of members it was decided to undertake the construction of a nine hole extension of the golf course on the Foxhall land which was available on a long term lease.
22. 7. 1986 Opening of the 9 hole extension by Craig Defoy, The Welsh National Coach.
1991 Clubhouse extended to meet growing demand of members and visitors.
2000 Ladies locker room extended and a new kitchen and office accomodation were added and new Greenkeepers' facilities built.
2003 Clubhouse completely refurbished.
2004 New irrigation system for course installed.
2006 New Buggy shed built.
2008 Centenary Year.
